La Conciergerie – A royal castle
This former royal residence and prison is a fascinating testament to Paris’ turbulent past and is a must-see for history buffs.
The story behind Conciergerie
The building was originally constructed as part of the Palais de la Cité, which served as the residence of French kings until the 14th century. When the royal power moved to the Louvre, the Conciergerie was transformed into a court and a prison.
During the French Revolution, the building became infamous as a prison for political prisoners, including the iconic Marie-Antoinette, who spent her last days here before her execution.
