Musée Delacroix – An art gem in the 6th arrondissement

In the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is the Musée National Eugène Delacroix – an intimate and atmospheric museum dedicated to one of France’s greatest Romantic painters. The museum is housed in the artist’s last home and studio, where he lived from 1857 until his death in 1863. Its location in the peaceful Rue de Furstenberg makes for a very special experience.

Who was Eugène Delacroix?

Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) is considered the leading figure in French Romantic painting. His works are filled with drama, emotion and strong colors – in stark contrast to the classical style that dominated his time. Delacroix was inspired by literature, oriental travel and the political events of his time.

His most famous painting, “Liberty Leads the People”, now hangs in the Louvre and is an iconic symbol of revolution and freedom. In addition to his artistic work, he kept a diary throughout his life, giving a unique insight into his thoughts and methods.

Walk in the footsteps of Eugène Delacroix

When you enter the apartment, you immediately feel the connection to Delacroix’s life and work. The painter’s own furniture, sketches, letters and personal belongings are displayed alongside several of his works. The small studio is bathed in natural light and the garden behind the house is a hidden green oasis in the middle of the city – perfect for a quiet break after visiting the museum.

Highlights of the collection

One of the most moving works is “Madeleine dans le désert”, which hangs in the former bedroom. The museum also offers temporary exhibitions that often put Delacroix in dialog with other artists and eras. A visit here not only provides insight into the life of an artist, but also into the artistic and intellectual Paris of the 19th century.
