Place de la Concorde – In historical portal

With its rich history, impressive monuments and central location, Place de la Concorde serves as a hub connecting some of the city’s most famous attractions.

From revolution to harmony

The square was originally built in 1755 as Place Louis XV to honor the king. During the French Revolution the statue of the king was removed and the square was renamed Place de la Révolution. The guillotine was set up here and over 1,100 people, including King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette, were executed.

In 1795, the square was renamed Place de la Concorde as a symbol of peace and reconciliation after the chaos of the Revolution. Today, the square stands as a majestic landmark with its own dramatic history.

The Egyptian obelisk and fountains

One of the most eye-catching elements of the square is the 23 meter high Luxor Obelisk, a gift from Egypt in 1831. The obelisk, which is over 3,000 years old, stands in the center of the square and is surrounded by two beautiful fountains: Fontaine des Mers and Fontaine des Fleuves, which add elegance to the large space.
