The square was created in the late 17th century by order of Louis XIV who wanted a representative square to celebrate the power and wealth of the kingdom. It was designed by architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart and its harmonious facades represent classic French architecture.

In the center of the square stands the Colonne Vendôme, an impressive column inspired by the Column of Trajan in Rome. It was erected by Napoleon in 1810 to celebrate victory at the Battle of Austerlitz and is decorated with bronze reliefs made from cannons taken from the enemy.
