Sacré-Cœur – Montmartres jewel

With its brilliant white facade, rich history and stunning views of Paris, it attracts millions of visitors every year.

The story of Sacré-Cœur

The construction of Sacré-Cœur began in 1875 as a symbol of hope and reconciliation after the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. The basilica was designed by architect Paul Abadie in a Romanesque-Byzantine style that differs from many other churches in Paris. It was completed in 1914 and inaugurated in 1919 after the First World War.

The name “Sacré-Cœur” means “Sacred Heart,” a reference to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is a central symbol in the Catholic faith.

Architecture and interior design

Sacré-Cœur stands out with its white domes, built from travertine stone that naturally refreshes in contact with rainwater. The main dome of the basilica rises 83 meters and provides a stunning silhouette of the city.

Inside, the basilica impresses with its gigantic mosaic work, “Christ in Majesty,” which is one of the largest mosaics in the world. The silence and peaceful atmosphere make it a place of reflection and prayer.
