Saint-Sulpice – One of Paris’ largest churches
Saint-Sulpice is the second largest church in Paris – second only to Notre-Dame. Construction began in 1646 but spanned more than a century, which explains the variety of architectural features. The facade with the two towers is a landmark in the cityscape, and on Place Saint-Sulpice in front of the church you’ll find a beautiful fountain.
Art and architecture in Saint-Sulpice
Inside Saint-Sulpice you can see works by some of France’s greatest artists. Most famous are Eugène Delacroix’s frescoes in the Chapel of the Holy Angels, which depict dramatic biblical scenes.
The church also houses a unique gnomon sundial from the 18th century that was used to determine the time of Easter. A sunlight through a hole in the wall hits a line of brass in the floor and the construction still works today.
Saint-Sulpice in popular culture
The church gained international fame through the novel The Da Vinci Code, in which Saint-Sulpice plays an important role in the plot. Although the book takes some liberties, it has made the church a favorite stop for curious visitors.
