The Catacombs – A unique sight
The catacombs of Paris were transformed into a burial ground at the end of the 18th century and today they hold the remains of millions of people.
It’s an attraction unlike anything else in the city and offers a deep insight into Paris’ past.
The story behind the Catacombs
The catacombs were originally created as limestone quarries in the 13th century, where stone was mined to build Paris. When the city’s cemeteries became overcrowded in the late 1700s, the authorities decided to use the tunnels as a solution. In 1786, bones from the city’s cemeteries began to be moved to the catacombs and over the years, around six million human remains were placed there.
